The Friday Rant: What the hell is web 2.0?
Friday, 22 June 2007 00:00
I mean, come on guys, who’s being kidded here?

Ok, so I’m a technologist and I’m looking through various documentation for web 2.0 stuff. Can I find it? Nope.

It doesn’t exist!

There’s no new html tags, no XML bolt ons and no TCP changes that I can find.

So the web uses html as the markup language, http as the web server to browser glue, and TCP as the communications protocol.

Wheres the web 2.0 in any of that?

It doesn’t exist.

So a look at Wikipedia for the definition of web 2.0 and it seems that if you are reading this, then guess what? This is web 2.0.

Duhhhhhh! Noob!

Didn’t you know blogs are classed as web 2.0, as are RSS feeds (I also have one), and wait for it;- an architecture of participation.

Whoot! Bet you want one of those eh?

So web 2.0?

It’s all marketing bollocks.

What happened to the days when a web browser received content from a web server? Ahhh, but if it’s data rich and driven by a database, governed by an architecture of participation with RSS feeds then its web 2.0.

Cant wait for web 3.0, I’m gonna include colour, and I invented it first!

Dave
