I’ve been after a new mobile phone for some time now, but as a typical male I’m reluctant to change what’s working a little like the shoes I wear, once they fit, they stay on until they fall off. I had heard rumours about the Nokia N95 and how good it was, heck I even blogged and took the piss about it’s bar code reading abilities and how much of a must have feature that must have been. All was going well in mobile phone heaven, an uncomplicated lifestyle with a simple make and receive calls and text messages setup. Then the killer application came along… Those who read this blog regularly may have noticed that I’m a bit of a geeky saddo. I kind of do things while others are enjoying the hospitality of the local public house. So this phone managed to do what no other gadget I have does. Marry photography with model aircraft and provide a mission. What this little technological marvel has that makes it unique are a 5 mega pixel digital camera with focussing lens and image stabilisation, and a GPS receiver. So what? I hear you muttering… Well, last weekend I was approached by a chap running a new community called Pict Earth (website here). These guys (aero modellers with cameras). What they were doing was mapping the terrain of out planet with model aircraft and cameras. The snazzy part though is that when you can tag the images with the GPS coordinates it then becomes very easy to stitch them seamlessly into Google Earth. That means we get up to date images for our areas. Check out Ed Parsons blog here to see how it all works. Now how cool is that? Add your comment |
