Southport Radio Car Club

So last Sunday I had an invitation to attend the Southport Radio Car club. Well the action was fast, the rain was heavy and the people were great. I really enjoyed my time there, but being my first RC car meeting I really had no idea what was going on.

It seems that throughout the day drivers are allocated to race groups in heats. Each driver is racing against the clock in their allotted heat and this continues for several sessions during the day. After each driver has raced in about 4 or 5 heats the fastest are called forward into the ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals of the day. I had loads of fun and I would really recommend it. It offers easy access for all, and the spectators can get really close to the action. I have divided up the pictures into four arbitrary sections. See you there again soon! The SRCC run a website here.

Superkart Racing from Oulton Park
Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:09
These Superkarts are extremely quick with top speeds around 150mph. These little machines are powered by 250cc single or twin cylinder engines producing around 62 BHP. With a full race faring and little inertia or mass, they were lapping the full Oulton International circuit at around 1 min 40 seconds, a full ten seconds faster than the Formula 3 cars racing there just two weeks earlier.

The Superkart shots were all taken from Old Hall Corner as they whiz past in a colourful blur or outright speed. As a race driver, you must surely have something missing between the ears to race around the circuit at 150mph with your back side only 3 inches above the track?

Motocross meeting: Norley near Delamere Forest, Cheshire.
Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:09
This was my second visit to a motocross event. Quite a big course and plenty for the riders and spectators. I’m finding that more and more the dreaded health and safety have arrived and legislated photographers further away from the track. It’s no longer enough to have a long lens on the camera as the second fence will always appear in your images unless you are in the riders face. It seems the event photographers have a big advantage here as they can traverse the barriers and get beyond the not so scenic ropes for those clear shots.

Honda Superclub and New Era Motorbike Racing
Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:09
This Oulton Park bike meeting held several classes including the Sound of Thunder, Formula 600, Bridgestone Pro-Bike Open Championship, Formula 400 and Honda CB500’s. Superb racing action was witnessed as these hot-on-steroids racing machines hurtled past.

These shots are from Knickerbrook and are mostly tightly cropped onto the rider and machine. This is the first time I’ve attempted to photograph bikes, and am quite pleased with the result, though it’s quite difficult shooting at a 200th of a second to get the now obligatory blurring of the background as these machines jockey for position. Enjoy the images.

Stunning bike action from the Superbikes as they thunder around the Oulton Park circuit at speeds up to 150 mph. Shots here from the Saturday practice sessions taken at Lodge Corner, Knickerbrook, Brittens and Hilltop. The cream of racing motorbike action.

North Wales Autograss Race Meeting
Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:09
Ill admit that I had no idea what I was letting myself in for here. I picked up on the event the week before and thought I’d take a look. After appraising the track I was disappointed to find that there were four fences separating the action from the spectators, so getting any close shots appeared to be a none starter. Once the action began, it became obvious why so many fences were required.

To the untrained eye (that’s me) the event looked chaotic. What happens is that groups of cars race four laps around an oval circuit. Cars are divided into different classes based on drive system (front/rear), engine size, modification and driver age. Kids as young as 12 were competing behind the wheels of unmodified minis. The Autograss is billed as a non contact sport, but I think you’ll agree from the pictures there’s more than a little contact involved.

Oulton Park 'Season Opener' Race Meeting.
Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:09
As it’s on my doorstep, I thought I’d try Oulton Park for photographic opportunities. These images are from the Sat 31st march 2007 season opener meeting. Images are from the Club Formula Ford, Dunlop Tuscan Challenge and VSR Super Silhouette Championship races. I really didn’t know what to expect when I arrived so I turned up on spec. I found the venue photographer friendly, informal easy going. There are a number of vantage points to get great shots. Just driving in and heading straight will take you to the Avenue. You can park just about anywhere inside the circuit. From the Avenue you’ll get great inside corner shots from old Hall Corner.

I moved to the outside of Old Hall Corner by driving back out of the race venue and taking the next two lefts. You can re enter the track from the Eastgate Entrance and drive around to the corner for another load of great shots. I then drove around to the Knickersbrook entrance and tool a load of shots from the embankment leading (Clay Hill) up to the footbridge and from Knickersbrook itself. I also took the opportunity to wander around the pits area and get close to some of the cars. Definitely worth a day out, easy access and parking. Highly recommend.

All the races from the Easter Monday sessions are in this section. Enjoy images from Formula 3, GT, Formula Ford, Ginetta and VW racing.

Formula 3 Racing
The Formula 3 racing was spectacular. There were several restarts due to red flags, probably due to the ensuing drizzle combined with the slicks that everyone was using. Click the photo for more images.

Moldsworth 4x4 hill and ditch event

Clic pic for more
Driving home from Chester I noticed the ubiquitous dayglo orange triangles and just had to follow them. Expecting to find a motocross event I was mildly surprised to find a 4x4 off road event.

Compared to usual motor sports events, this was very relaxed. Instead of perching behind the usual barriers and access limitations I found here the course changed after every stage and frequently you were running out of the way of vehicles.

.There were two major classes running simultaneously here: One for road ready cars and the other for 'modified' vehicles. Clearly the drivers and spectators were enjoying the event. Several times during the day vehicles were rolling over and down the steep embankments.

All images shot with Canon 350D and 28-135mm F3.5 - 5.6 IS lens.
