Today the new Canon 100-400mm F 4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens arrived. It's by far the most expensive lens I have, but wow! The image quality is superb and it seems to take brilliant close up shots as well. I seem to have spent more time 1.8 meters away from subjects (minimum focusing distance) than looking for distant objects. Im really pleased that it bridges the gap between my macro lens and general purpose zoom lenses, so I can fill the frame with a subject as small as 15 cm across.
Given that every photograph except the blackbird was taken hand holding the camera and lens, the image stabiliser does an excellent job.
These photographs are from the first batch having screwed the lens onto the camera and dashed into the garden to see what was out there. From the seeding Dandelion and the lone tulip (it had just rained) to the blackbird and it's fledglings all images are sharp and shown with natural colour.
During the first dash into the garden I snapped up the Dandelion and Tulip. I love the 400mm focal length, perfect for isolating flowers.
The lone Blackbird is the male of a mating pair that have been nesting in my hedge. It was only when I pointed the camera lens out of the window that I noticed it's three fledglings. I was rather lucky to capture them all together on the gate.
The Carnation is sitting in the kitchen in a vase. When I uploaded the pictures to my PC I was really surprised how it came out given I was hand holding the camera, indoors, using only natural light on a dull day.
I love the angle the rugby ball is shot at. It must have been about 16 meters away, but the shallow angle makes the grass look a little like a bowling lawn that just drifts in and out of focus.
The purple flowers (3 photos) are growing around the front door to the house. The colours are washed out and the images make a really accurate depiction of this.
